As the Expenditures Turn

As fans of transparency, we’d like to be transparent about the inner workings of the Federal Priorities Database.

We’re grateful for the kind words we got after yesterday’s launch. We were also happy to receive some feedback: a request to add spending information for Adult Education.

Like all programs in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, the master list of federal programs and services that assist the American public, Adult Education yearly expenditures are reported, aggregated, and published ...

new data: adult education

There's a new expenditure in the Federal Priorities Database.

  • Adult Education: grants to states that fund local programs of adult education and literacy services as authorized by the Title II Workforce Investment Act of 1998.

Underemployment (U-6)

Earlier this week, we added a new dataset to the Federal Priorities Database: underemployment. I really like this metric and think it's worthy of further explanation.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines the unemployed as people who “do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work.”

By this definition, these people are excluded from the unemployment rate:

  • Marginally attached: people looking work in the past year but not during the past 4 weeks
  • Involuntary part-time: people who want to work full time but are working less than ...

There's a new indicator in the Federal Priorities Database.

  • Underemployment: Percent of the civilian labor force unemployed, marginally attached (available but not currently looking for work), or involuntarily working part-time.

new data: federal, state, and local percentages of school district revenue

We've added 3 datasets to our school district-level offerings.

  • Local revenues as percentage of total: Percentage of a school district's total revenues that come from local sources
  • State revenue as percentage of total: Percentage of a school district's total revenues that come from state sources
  • Federal revenue as percentage of total: Percentage of a school district's total revenues that come from federal sources

We've added 13 previously-orphaned school district-level datasets. Although the search tool itself can't currently display school districts, the data is available for stand-alone viewing and download here.

  • All other federal aid: Dollar amount of miscellaneous federal funding to the school district
  • Bilingual education: Dollar amount of funds received from the federal government to provide English as a Second Language classes to students with limited English proficiency as authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
  • Eisenhower math and science: Dollar amount of grants received from the federal government to train teachers in math and science education
  • Native American ...

new data: student teacher ratio

There's a new indicator in the Federal Priorities Database.

  • Student Teacher Ratio: number of students for every public school teacher.

new data: Head Start enrollment

We've added an indicator to the Federal Priorities Database.

  • Head Start enrollment: number of children enrolled in a Head Start program.

The Head Start program provides grants to local public and private non-profit and for-profit agncies to provide child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families.
